The New York Times is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile reporter to join the Business Desk to cover business, economics and wealth from the Persian Gulf. At the core of the beat are the vast sums of money and geopolitical influence wielded by the region’s companies and sovereign and private investment funds. Additional priorities for this beat are the policymakers who set the rules of engagement for firms in the energy, transportation, logistics and shipping, and banking sectors.

We are looking for an energetic and determined journalist who loves to own a beat, publish scoops and exclusive reporting, and thrives when competing on the most compelling and important storylines. Experience and proven success in building and cultivating sources in challenging reporting environments are a must. You will work closely with other reporters in the Middle East and Europe, as well as in Asia and the United States. The energy beat reporters in London and New York and the Gulf bureau chief will be regular reporting partners. This is a high metabolism job. You will write breaking news, second-day stories, analysis, explainers and enterprise. You will collaborate across multiple desks and teams including International, Breaking News, Video and Graphics. You will write articles, short Live updates, contribute to newsletters and videos and participate in collaborative reporting projects.

This role will be based in the Gulf and reports to the International Business Editor in London.

Responsibilities:

Follow news, events and trends on your beat, in conjunction with your colleagues and editors, themes worthy of coverage as breaking news, day news or as enterprise.
Must be as comfortable and enthusiastic reacting to immediate breaking news as you are writing thoughtfully and deeply about events, issues, companies and people.
Write medium- and long-term enterprise and the occasional entertaining feature.
Contribute to and sometimes be the lead correspondent on live briefings, join planning meetings and provide live coverage.
Build a network of sources that will inform rich and original reports, news and features.
Cover news accurately and efficiently; maintain and cultivate news sources and contacts; obtain information through interviews, observations and research.
Present facts and analysis in clear written form and in conformity with Times style, length and other requirements, and developing high-impact stories from the broader themes that underpin incremental news developments.
Write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits.
Commit to The New York Times’s strategy, ethics, standards and mission for both themselves, their team, stringers and colleagues.
Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Significant reporting experience.
Arabic language skills are preferred but not required.
